A BRUTAL NEW
long distance trail runNING CHALLENGE
The Baleka (meaning ‘run’ in isiXhosa, the local tongue of the Wild Coast) was born when legendary ultra distance trail runner Steve Black asked race director Barry Armitage if he could “race the horses” during Race the Wild Coast 2018. Steve went on to finish on the morning of the fifth day. His finish line comment was “I could have done it in 4!” With the winning rider typically crossing the line on the afternoon of the 4th day, the race is on between man and beast!
WHAT
A solo 320km / 111 hour / Single Stage Trail Run
WHERE
The Wild Coast on South Africa’s eastern seaboard, from Mzamba River gorge in the north to the mouth of the mighty Kei River in the south.
WHEN
Postponed to 2022 due to COVID19 (Official dates TBC).
WHO
The adventure format of the race requires athletes with serious long distance trail running credentials and with competence in operating a GPS; the critical aid to navigating in this challenging landscape. They also need to be confident swimmers and be comfortable in the wilderness, alone and self sufficient.
Runners must complete an application form, including details of their qualifications to compete in the race. Acceptance of applications will be at the discretion of the organisers.
“The SCENERY is worth the trip itself, but the thrill of racing and the self discovery when tackling the challenges in a race environment are totally different and worth it too! Its amazing what you can do when you set your mind to it!”
