The Rockethorse Challenge was born in October 2018 when legendary South African extreme trail runner Steve Black asked race director Barry Armitage if he could “race the horses”. Shortly afterward Steve’s mate, sometime adversary, and long distance surf skier Clyde Barendse, joined the challenge. While Clyde dramatically exited the race after the Wild Coast claimed his boat on day 2, Steve went on to finish on the morning of the fifth day. His finish line comment was “I could have done it in 4!” With the first rider typically crossing the line on the afternoon of the 4th day; the race is on between man and beast!

A new breed of long distance horse racing, blending the spirit of the frontiersman and the modern horseback adventurer: testing horsemanship, endurance, survival and navigational skills across an iconic wilderness.
